August 2025 – My Blog Journey with Akabo United FC

A lot has happened with Akabo United FC this autumn! Here’s a short summary of what’s been going on during September and October.

Trials in Abuja

Our head coach Darlington returned to Imo State to reorganize our main team in Ikeduru. Both KK and Ifeanyi were officially selected to join the Central Academy’s main team, which was a big step forward for us. Unfortunately, at the end of September, we were informed that the club owner would be selecting only a few final players for the team’s trial abroad. During a friendly match, our captain KK was injured and later dismissed from the team, leaving only Ifeany to continue. We are still waiting for the official contracts.

After this, our captain returned home, and the head coach followed a week later. Around the same time, we received some positive news about new outcomes for the team. However, in Imo, we had to start reorganizing our team management and player structure again.

We were also invited to a four-day scout program in Abuja through our partner and assistant coach, a former Tiki-Taka coach. However, since we already planned to participate in three tournaments in October in Owerri — Dom Daniel Tournament Cup, PF Super League 2025 Fixtures, and Game On Africa Tournament — we had to make difficult financial choices. With hotel and travel costs rising, we decided to skip Abuja this year and aim for next year instead.

Challenges and Lessons Learned

October has been a valuable learning period for our management. We’ve seen what it truly takes to meet the level and discipline required in professional tournaments. Things like haircut rules, fines for lateness, and even penalties for missing shinguards have been strict but educational for our players.

Travel has also been challenging — traffic, weather conditions, and finding buses to different parts of Owerri are not easy. Our players have shown real commitment, often contributing to their own travel and accommodation costs.

Another issue has been age verification — all players must have passports, and only 25 can be registered per team. Injuries and last-minute rule changes have made this even tougher. One major disappointment was losing our striker’s spot at the Dom Daniel scout program due to a misunderstanding about his age — a simple misheard number cost him the opportunity.

Despite these setbacks, we received an encouraging call from the Commissioner of Youth and Sports in Owerri,Hon Obinna Onyeocha-Onowu inviting us to join an upcoming scout program. We have already registered and are waiting for further information.

New Beginnings: Legacy FC Academy

We are proud to announce the pilot launch of our first Legacy FC Academy in Ikeduru for boys under 15 years old. Training has already started 1–2 days a week on our field with our coaches. We are now preparing consent letters for parents to sign through our lawyer, making everything official. This is a big milestone for our grassroots development work.

Studies, Projects, and Cooperation

I am continuing my USVA studies at Turku University of Applied Sciences, developing projects in sports management, fundraising, and sponsorship — all directly supporting Akabo United and our partner clubs. My main focus is building mindset coaching and life skills programs for grassroots players.

In early October, I had a meeting with SC United Academy in Helsinki about the first START online mindset course — an 8-month program including breathing exercises, stress management, and practical assignments. Our cooperation partners were very pleased with the outcome, and I plan to submit this as my final development project for evaluation in December, hoping to graduate from USVA studies by the end of the year.

Looking Ahead

One of our biggest achievements this month is that Coach Darlington received his permit to travel to Finland to reunite with his family and start language courses and further studies. Together, we will now begin developing a remote coaching platform, allowing us to train and communicate across borders.

Our two assistant coaches and the board of trustees will continue leading grassroots training and development programs in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, our partner Tiki-Taka Football Academy in Abuja is launching a fundraising campaign and planning a scouting program in February 2026 for U16 players. We are currently preparing CVs for four of our boys to apply. The invitation came from Börje Gustavsson, one of Tiki-Taka’s founders — a great honor for us.

It’s exciting to see how everything is evolving. Step by step, Akabo United FC is growing stronger — in spirit, skill, and teamwork.

Until next time!
