August 2025 – My Blog Journey with Akabo United FC

After returning from Nigeria at the end of July, where I spent four weeks with our team and crew, a lot has happened with Akabo United FC. This is a short summary of what has been going on in August.

Trials in Abuja

Our main team of 15 players traveled to Abuja after being invited by Central Academy for a trial period of 2–4 weeks. The journey from Owerri, Imo State, to Abuja took about 16 hours by minibus. Once in Abuja, the team stayed at our local partner motel close to Go Project Arena, so they could easily walk to training and matches. During this period, our players trained hard, played friendly matches, and gained valuable exposure. Even though we lost several games, many of our boys were noticed by coaches and scouts. Two to three players in particular caught attention and were offered the opportunity to stay longer and potentially join new teams.

Our head coach, Darlington Arikaibe, joined the team one week later and worked actively to build new contacts and partnerships. This effort paid off when one of our players, Ifeanyi, was selected to continue training with Central Academy.
Challenges Along the Way

The weeks in Abuja were not easy. The players faced illnesses and injuries, and unfortunately, Ifeanyi’s recovery took longer than expected. When he was ready to return, there were many gaps in communication and unclear schedules, which made the process difficult.

To resolve this, our captain KK, striker Santos, and Coach Darlington returned to Abuja to seek answers and ensure our players could continue with the academy. Their hard work paid off—both KK and Ifeaney were officially selected to join Central Academy’s main team. This was a big step forward for us. At the same time, not everything went as planned. We lost one partnership with an “agent,” and another academy that I had visited in July for a mental coaching class did not include us in their scouting program, which was disappointing. Still, we moved forward.

Positive Outcomes
Despite the setbacks, the 2–6 weeks of hard work—training, networking, and meeting coaches, businessmen, team owners, and even politicians—resulted in a huge achievement: our captain and one of our key players secured places in a top academy. This gives hope for the future and brings us closer to our dream of one day seeing our players travel to Europe.

Training at Home

Meanwhile, our home team in Imo State continued training under our assistant coaches TomTom and Samuel. Because of the smaller squad, we organized a player screening between September 10–18, looking for 1–2 new potential players. We also played several friendly matches, many of which we won. You can see highlights of these matches on our Instagram and TikTok pages.

Cooperation and Development

In Finland, we faced another challenge when our cooperation with the Collaball community ended unexpectedly in early September. This was a negative turning point, but also a chance for us to reflect and focus on facts, values, and long-term goals.

I am continuing my USVA studies at Turku University of Applied Sciences, where I am developing projects in sports management, fundraising, and sponsorship. These projects directly support Akabo United and our partner clubs, especially in building mindset coaching and life skills for grassroots players.

We are also looking into coaching education programs and even Computer programming as part of our development.
Looking Ahead

The next step for Akabo United FC will be in October, when our team has been invited to another scouting program in Abuja. Before that, we will hold online mindset coaching classes for the players through our WhatsApp group. We are also considering new jerseys for the team.

The journey has not been easy, but we continue to stay strong, healthy, and hopeful. With faith, hard work, and the support of our community, we believe we will succeed—in the name of God.

Thank you for following our journey. Until next time, “Akabo United FC is more than football – it’s about giving young people a chance to grow, dream, and create a better future. Every step forward is a victory for the whole community.”
